What is Herbal Medicine?

What is herbal medicine?

Herbal medicine is also called botanical medicine or phytomedicine, which refers to using a plant's seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark, or flowers for medicinal purposes. The scope of herbal medicine is sometimes extended to include fungal and bee products, as well as minerals, shells and certain animal parts.

Herbal medicine products are dietary supplements that people take to improve their health. They are sold as tablets, capsules, powders, teas, extracts, and fresh or dried plants.

Among them the teas are made from dried herbs left to soak for a few minutes in hot water, or by boiling herbs in water and then straining the liquid, these tea formulae should be formulated specifically for individual patient by well trained practitioners; usually the teas are more satisfied the patient’s condition and more effective then other forms of herbs.

Chinese patent medicine are another form of them, they are standardized herbal formulae, usually, several herbs and other ingredients are dried and ground, then mixed into a powder and formed into pills, which are characteristically little round black pills.

Chinese patent medicines are easy and convenient. They are not easy to customize on a patient-by-patient basis, however. They are best used when a patient's condition is not severe and the medicine can be taken as a long-term treatment.

These medicines are not "patented" in the traditional sense of the word. No one has exclusive rights to the formula. Instead, "patent" refers to the standardization of the formula. All Chinese patent medicines of the same name will have the same proportions of ingredients. Practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine, licensed acupuncturist/herbalists, chiropractors, naturopathic physicians, pharmacists, and medical doctors all may use herbs to treat illness.

However, some can cause health problems, some are not effective and some may interact with other drugs you are taking. To use an herbal product as safely as possible, when it as needed, please consult your doctor or qualified practitioner first; do not take a bigger dose than the label recommends unless your health care provider indicated; take it under the guidance of a trained medical professional; be especially cautious if you are pregnant or nursing. Our herbal medicine team consists of well trained licensed practitioners.

The descriptions about herbal pills' functions are based on traditional Chinese medical theories. It is important that we know that the concepts of the terms in these descriptions are totally different from modern medicine.
